Automatic height adjustment

I can get a used new Proteam 1500xp 15" vacuum pretty cheap but I am concerned about the automatic height adjustment on area rugs. Anyone use these style vacuums on area rugs or is that style of vacuum best to avoid delicate fibers with?

Windsor vacuum has been using that for years. It is a simple circuit that senses the brush motor amperage and adjusts the beater up or down based on the motors load. I stayed away from them for years because of that but now 3 outa 4 of my windsor's vacuums that have that and have grown to like the feature. As far as your concern about delicate area rugs. I think there would more problems with manual adjustment left on the wrong setting than a brush that senses that the motor is working too hard because the brush is too low and adjusts it up. I dont know about the vacuum your thinking about but on the windsor, when the handle is in the upright position the brush automatically raises to the highest setting and will readjust down when the handle is unlocked and you start using it again

I went through about 3 of those proteams before I said screw it. Too much plastic stuff that breaks, heavy weight, and a vacuum bag that's too expensive to be that small of a bag.

And if you're worrying about damaging fibers on a rug, the rug needs to be in a rug washing shop. Team up with a rug washing business and have them set up a pick up and drop off from your place

Or, if you are wanting to play with a few delicate rugs yourself and are messing with those rugs that might get damaged if vacuumed, get the dry dirt out another way by vacuuming the back of the rug upside down. YOu'll be surprised how much dirt vibrates down out of the rug just through vibration. Actually, it's the same concept of vacuuming normally from the beater bar, but instead of the suction of the vacuum removing the dirt, gravity is doing the removing.

But back to your original question, no, don't waste your money on that vacuum

Thanks. I'm not really "worried" about damaging fibers on a rug, it just seems like if I can't control the height of the brush roll than eventually it will damage fibers on a rug, hence my post. I've cleaned hundreds of rugs at this point, many of them high end and delicate. I have never damaged any of them. The only time I refer anything to a rug plant is if it is bleeding or needs deodorization, or if someone opens up the conversation on the phone saying "I have an antique oriental rug that is worth $20,000". There aren't any rug cleaning plants close enough to me to setup a pickup and dropoff from my place that would make sense for them or my customers. I should try flipping a rug and beating dirt out of it with a vacuum, still never done that.

Thanks for the suggestion about avoiding that vacuum. I'll keep my eye out for good commercial ones on Marketplace. I may just pony up the cash and buy one full price at a vacuum store near me soon.

The windsor's xp12 like i have are around 700.00 new now they are very very well built. Bags run between .99 on the low end and 2.29 each for the best . I use janitized and buy by the case 1/2 off @ 1.10 each. If you look on ebay there's some great deals on used windsors. I've found that like a lot of commercial equipment its eighter totally worn out or like new Barely Used. I only bid on things like that if theres pictures of exact item im bidding on and have had really good luck. An added note: on this vacuum, the brush itself does not move rather a wheel raises and lowers to set the brush height based on the amp draw of the brush motor.

I'm in northeast CT. Kaoud Rugs is within 30 minutes of me. I don't care to lug rugs around in my van. Do your customers drop off and pickup rugs themselves? At that point I feel like a bum, but my van with the CDS is stuffed, despite all the room a CDS leaves.

The adjustment is based on the amp draw of the motor, does that mean it is another auto adjustment feature?

I want one vacuum on my van, and when doing area rugs I don't want the brush roll to ever have strong resistance and potential fiber damage, even for a second.
